Heinz Peter Knes

figures – A collaborative production at stations, Berlin.

Heinz Peter Knes, DISTANT CASUALS, Ricardo Domeneck

figures is a collaborative durational piece, a performative reflection on different typologies or characters and the energies they transact in society, be it outside or within its norms. These chosen figures exist, but are in equal measure figments of (our) imagination, pyschoanalytical tools, the stuff of mythology. They are: the golden boy, woman with weapon, the doppelganger, and the forgotten. They are enforcers of law, agents of chaos, victim and opressor. They‘re part of a cultural history whose monolithic, solid quality is being called into question. The piece starts from text, becomes film, becomes dance, and ends as spoken word (but it is not a final word).
Berlinische Galerie acquiries "Gesture Studies" for its permanent collection
15 October 2023
Heinz Peter Knes' photographic installation "Gesture Studies" is now part of the collection of Berlinische Galerie. The work consists of 139 C-prints, which are mounted on A3 paper and form nine groups. In 2018 Heinz Peter Knes began to collect gestural forms from his earlier portrait works. From all the gestures he finally selected nine gestures that possessed the performative characteristics that suited him, e.g stretching out the hand, turning around oneself, holding the head or feeling the pulse.
Previously the installation was presented 2023 at Amtsalon Berlin in "Touch. Politiken der Berührung", curated by Maren Lübbke-Tidow & Rebecca Wilton, 2021/22 at Duane Thomas Gallery in New York and 2021 at Sismógrafo in Porto, curated by Melissa Canbaz.
